The Current Version

Important Information when Upgrading to Media Composer v2.7.5 or Avid Xpress Pro v5.7.5

The current version is Media Composer 2.7.5 (Xpro 5.7.5). It includes numerous bug fixes and offers greater reliability and stability. However, on the Mac, there is a potential install issue. It is not seen on all systems, and there is an easy fix.

MAC-ONLY INSTALL ISSUES

If you performed an upgrade from x.7.2 or x.7.3 to the current release and received a "Please Try Installing Again" message, do the following:

  1. Open the Applications/Avid_Uninstallers folder. Run Uninstaller for the applicable editing application.
  2. Open the Library/Receipts folder. Delete the AvidCoreRuntime.pkg and AvidDIORuntime.pkg.
  3. Run the x.7.5 Installer.
  4. If you still receive an error, delete the Avid folder from the /Library/Application Support folder.
  5. Run the x.7.5 Installer.

If you performed an upgrade from x.7.4 to the current release and received a "Please Try Installing Again" message after performing the installation, do the following:

  1. Open the Applications/Avid_Uninstallers folder. Run Uninstaller for the applicable editing application.
  2. Run Uninstaller for AvidDIORuntime.
  3. Run Uninstaller for AvidCoreRuntime.
  4. Run the x.7.5 Installer.

Q: Should I do a complete uninstall?

A: No, that’s not necessary. Whereas some of these steps are similar to the ones performed in doing a complete, manual uninstall, it’s not necessary to get around this install issue. It is recommended that you only perform the above steps for ease of operation, as it is the quickest workaround.

Apple OSX /QuickTime Compatibility

Apple designed its operating system to include the majority of hardware interface protocols. This approach has pros and cons. The benefit is that most devices are plug-n-play on the Mac. The disadvantage is that the version of the Mac OS has a much larger effect on the hardware-related applications, namely, your Media Composer. Likewise, QuickTime and its codecs are foundational to the Avid editors. Changes to the QuickTime version can have significant effects on the performance and stability of the Avid editing application.

Use the following table to determine the correct version of Mac OS & QuickTime compatible with the version of Media Composer you are running.

How to Uninstall QuickTime

“Oops, Automatic Updates was turned on and I upgraded my QuickTime by accident! How do I go back???”

Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. QuickTime is a core part of OSX; as such, it can’t be uninstalled directly. Instead, it is necessary to backrev the entire OS. Fortunately, this can be done without deleting everything on the system drive, by using Apple’s process called “Archive & Install”. (Discussed in more detail on pg.___ of this CheatSheet)

Apple, on occasion, releases ‘Reinstallers’. These are designed to backrev the version of QuickTime on OSX systems to an older version without changing the OS version. However, they are limited in their availability and application.

The most recent reinstaller, is for reverting QT 7.0.1 to QT 6.5.2. Note: This reinstaller is only for systems running OSX 10.3.9.

For Mac systems running OS9, it is possible to uninstall QuickTime:
