Avid Licenses Sonic DVD Technology : (April 19,2004) Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ:SNIC) and Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVID) today announced that they have entered into a multi-year licensing and co-development agreement to integrate Sonic’s industry-leading DVD technology across Avid(R) nonlinear editing product lines. As part of the agreement, the two companies are debuting Avid DVD by Sonic(TM), a professional DVD creation product that is fully integrated with the new Avid Xpress(R) Studio suite, as well as the Avid Studio Tools option for Media Composer(R) Adrenaline(TM), giving customers the ability to quickly and easily create advanced DVD titles from their finished video projects. Avid also plans to bundle Sonic’s DVDit!(R) 5 and ReelDVD(R) LE software as standard components of the award-winning Avid Xpress DV, Avid Xpress Pro, and Media Composer Adrenaline products. « We’re committed to providing our customers with top-quality tools for editing, finishing, and mastering high-profile film and video projects. For the past five years, we’ve bundled Sonic’s industry-leading DVD authoring applications with our editing products, and now we’re extending our relationship with Sonic to deliver a DVD authoring tool that is even more integrated into the nonlinear editing environment, » said Charlie Russell, senior manager of product marketing for Avid. « Avid DVD by Sonic combines Sonic’s top-of-the-line DVD technology with the Avid interface our customers know and love. Avid DVD by Sonic offers easy creation of sophisticated, interactive DVD titles and supports the OpenDVD(R) standard, which allows finished DVDs to be edited without requiring re-authoring. The product also smoothly combines 4:3 and 16:9 video aspect ratios in a single project, supports the new double-layer disc burning technology, and includes up to eight tracks of 5.1-channel Dolby Digital audio and 32 subtitle tracks for easy versioning and localization. Avid plans to include Sonic DVDit! with Avid Xpress DV 4.5 software, scheduled to ship in Q2 2004. ReelDVD LE will be included with both the Avid Xpress Pro 4.5 and Media Composer Adrenaline 1.5 products, also scheduled to be available in Q2 2004. Avid DVD by Sonic is expected to be available in Q2 2004 and will be priced at $1,995 as a standalone product; it will also be included in the Avid Xpress Studio and Avid Studio Tools packages. . Avid Unveils Xpress Studio : (April 19,2004) Avid Technology, Inc. introduced the Avid Xpress(R) Studio system – the industry’s first all-in-one content creation suite for DV professionals that includes highly integrated video editing, audio production, 3-D animation, compositing and titling, and DVD authoring software products combined with professional video and audio production hardware. Avid Xpress Pro software provides professional film and video editing capabilities, including multicam support, OneStep Auto Correct color correction, real-time moving alpha channels, MetaSync(TM) tracks, and collaborative editing with support for the Avid Unity(TM) LANshare EX networked-storage environment. The software also offers image stabilization, real-time pan and zoom, 24p editing, script-based editing, and support for a wide range of export formats, including Windows Media 9 HD, MPEG 2, and Macromedia Flash. – Avid Pro Tools(R) LE. Based on Academy Award(R)-winning Pro Tools technology from Avid’s Digidesign(R) division, Avid Pro Tools LE offers flexibility, power, and simplicity for audio editing and effects. The system supports up to 32 tracks of sample-accurate, 24-bit/96-kHz audio and up to 256 MIDI tracks. In addition, Avid Pro Tools LE includes the Digidesign DV Toolkit software package and a wide range of audio plug-ins that allow users to shift pitch, clean up background noise, replace dialogue, and instantly change the tempo of audio files. – Avid 3D. Based on the award-winning, industry-leading Boris Red titling and compositing package, Avid FX operates as an AVX plug-in for the Avid Xpress Pro application and offers more than 1,500 customizable title, effects, and transition templates. Avid FX also delivers advanced compositing, DVE technology, native vector titling, motion tracking, vector paint, and rotoscoping. – Avid DVD by Sonic(TM). Developed expressly for Avid by Sonic Solutions, the leader in DVD creation software, Avid DVD by Sonic supports the OpenDVD standard, which allows DVDs to be edited without requiring re-authoring. Avid DVD by Sonic smoothly combines 4:3 and 16:9 media in a single project (when encoded by Sorenson Squeeze, included with Avid Xpress Pro), supports double-layer discs, and offers additional integration enhancements, including creation of chapter marks and thumbnails in the Avid Xpress Pro timeline. A future release will support Windows HD DVD authoring. The software and hardware components of the Avid Xpress Studio system have been optimized to work together using open standards, such as MXF, AAF, OMF(R), MetaSync, and the AVX(TM) plug-in architecture. The extensive list of interoperability options includes the ability to: – create DVD chapter marks and poster frames within the Avid Xpress Pro timeline, and then easily export these elements for DVD encoding; – designate a section of the Avid Xpress Pro timeline to be opened within Avid 3D using MetaSync; – have MXF rendered footage from Avid 3D appear automatically in an Avid Xpress Pro bin; – use Avid FX motion tracking, rotoscoping, and advanced title and graphic animation with Avid Xpress Pro software, creating a robust compositing environment inside the editing application; – display an Avid 3D camera view and Avid FX composite window on an external broadcast monitor in real time using the Avid Mojo accelerator; – use the Avid Mojo accelerator for video connections and the Digidesign Mbox or Digi 002 for audio connections while maintaining sync; – use the Digi 002 control surface to adjust audio levels in both the Avid Xpress Pro and Avid Pro Tools LE applications. Avid Xpress Studio Complete is priced at $6,995 US, compared to a total retail value of nearly $12,000 USfor purchasing the products individually. Avid Xpress Pro to Deliver Extensive HD Support To work with native HDV, DVCPRO HD, and new Avid DNxHD (April 18,2004) : Avid Technology announced that Avid Xpress(R) Pro software – the award-winning, portable nonlinear editing solution for both Windows and Mac platforms – will support a wide range of HD formats. Planned for availability in late 2004, a future version of Avid Xpress Pro software will offer the ability to edit native HDV MPEG and Panasonic DVCPRO HD formats, as well as support Avid DNxHD(TM) – a revolutionary 10-bit HD encoding technology that enables HD postproduction with the same storage bandwidth and capacity requirements as SD files. The Avid DNxHD technology is engineered to deliver pristine image quality after multi-generation compositing, offering HDV users high-quality processing for stunning composites, titles, and graphics. « Avid Xpress Pro already offers a wealth of advanced editing features, and now we’re taking a giant leap forward by announcing the broadest range of support for HD formats in a portable editing solution, » said Tim Wilson, senior manager of product marketing for Avid. « Whether working with HDV, DVCPRO HD, or Avid DNxHD formats – or mixing them together in the same timeline – our customers will be able edit media of astonishing quality, even on a laptop, without lengthy transcode times or the bulky storage requirements typically associated with HD media. » Avid also today announced version 4.5 of Avid Xpress Pro software, expected to ship in Q2 2004. This version will offer new production capabilities, including Material Exchange Format (MXF) support, Panasonic DV50 media compatibility, FluidFilm progressive encoding, Windows Media 9 (WMV HD) direct export, and SmartSound SonicFire Pro professional soundtrack creation. Pricing & Availability : The version of Avid Xpress Pro software with HD capabilities is expected to be available in late 2004. Customers who purchase Avid Xpress Pro software after April 18, 2004, will be able to upgrade to this new version for $49.95 US. Avid Xpress Pro 4.5 software is expected to be available in Q2 2004 as a free upgrade for current Avid Xpress Pro customers. The Avid Xpress Pro software is priced at $1,695 US.
